Foden’s Band, from Cheshire, will be the most welcome guests of Brighouse & Rastrick Band at the Massed Bands concert in Huddersfield Town Hall on Sat. 28th October. Their distinctive red tunics will shine out amongst the famous purple and gold of ‘Brighouse’ and help make for yet another spectacular evening at this treasured music venue.
This autumn’s guest ensemble first appeared with B & R in 1949 (as Foden’s Motor Works Band, under Fred Mortimer) arriving then as North West champions as they have done frequently since. The welcome this time to Huddersfield should be warmer than ever following the trauma of a disastrous fire hitting Foden’s band room in April 2016, destroying most of what they owned. Instruments, uniforms and some music were borrowed or replaced but items of historic and sentimental value, in many cases, lost forever. But with their own determination and support of the banding and local community they pulled through and quickly start making good music again, albeit in very challenging circumstances.
So they will surely relish performing again with their friends from Brighouse and look forward to an exciting programme of music from across the globe. Themed ‘Brass around the World’, Guest Conductor, Michael Fowles, has chosen a fascinating mix of pieces which will highly entertain the usual large audience and feature B & R’s first female Principal Cornet, Kathleen Gospaz, born in the Swiss Alpine village of Vex. Kathleen continues her studies, for an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma at Royal Northern College of Music, and after the band’s summer break is relishing a return to prepare for the exciting Autumn contest and concert season.
